Boost Your Dog’s Gut Health with Saccharomyces Boulardii

As dog owners, we all want our dog’s to be healthy and happy (and of course live forever!). Whilst, sadly we can’t make this happen, one thing we can do is ensure their gut is in great shape. That’s where Saccharomyces boulardii, a natural probiotic yeast, comes in.

So before I dive into exactly what Saccharomyces Boulardii is and how to use it, I’m going to help you out with how to say it, because we know it can be a little bit of a mouthful, (“sack-car-oh-my-sees boo-lard-dee”) or you can simplify it as SB or S.boulardii, like we do.

Okay, now let’s nerd out and get into the good stuff!

What is Saccharomyces Boulardii?

SB is a probiotic yeast that’s great for your dog’s digestive system. It works by helping to balance the good and bad bacteria in the gut, which is key to keeping digestion smooth and supporting overall health.

How Does it Help Dogs?

  • Fights Bad Bacteria: S. boulardii blocks harmful bacteria from attaching to your dog’s gut, preventing infections and promoting a healthy digestive system.

  • Reduces Diarrhea: If your dog suffers from occasional diarrhea, whether from antibiotics, illness, or food sensitivities, S. boulardii can help. It restores balance in the gut and improves stool consistency.

  • Supports Gut Health During and After Antibiotics: Antibiotics are sometimes necessary but can wipe out both good and bad bacteria in your dog’s gut. S. boulardii helps restore the good bacteria, keeping your dog’s digestive system functioning smoothly. A great addition to add in whilst your dog is taking antibiotics and for a few weeks after.

Strengthens the Gut Wall: This probiotic helps reinforce the lining of the intestines, protecting your dog from “leaky gut,” which can cause inflammation and other health issues.

When Should You Use It?

S. boulardii is a great choice if your dog experiences any of the following:

  • Diarrhea from antibiotics, infections, or a sensitive stomach.

  • Digestive upset due to travel, dietary changes, or stress.

  • Recovery after illness where gut health may need extra support.

  • Prevention of gut issues when your dog is taking antibiotics or has a history of gut problems.

SB in my house is a daily non-negotiable for my boys Lenny and Barney. I add it to their breakfast every morning to ensure their gut health is at its best. Whilst it is my go to for any of the above symptoms such as diarrhea or recovery from illness, it is also fantastic as a daily preventative as it helps with overall gut function and inflammation.

A lovely client I have supported over in Ireland managed to overcome some major struggles with ongoing allergy flare ups and a compromised gut (as a result over vets over prescribing steroids and antibiotics) by incorporating SB into Odi’s diet, along with other necessary  supplements. His owner worked so hard for months despite other nutritionists and vets believing that diet alone would not help Odi’s issues.

“We worked on his gut and immune system and Odi is absolutely thriving on a hugely varied diet with zero gut or skin issues” - Odi’s dedicated and incredibly loving mum.

You can read more about his story here.

Why Choose S. Boulardii for Your Dog?

Unlike many other probiotics, Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast, so it’s highly effective even when your dog is on antibiotics. It doesn’t get wiped out the same way bacteria-based probiotics do. Plus, it’s safe, natural, and easy to add into their meals.

By adding S. boulardii to your dog’s diet, you can support their digestive health, boost their immune system, and help them recover faster from tummy troubles. Whether you're dealing with diarrhea, recovery from antibiotics, or just want to keep your dog’s gut strong, this powerful probiotic can make all the difference.

Keep your dog’s gut happy with Saccharomyces boulardii!
